Bishop Jim to step down
Bishop Jim White announced at Synod that he would step down from his episcopal ministry for medical reasons, at a time yet to be determined.
Bishop Jim preached at the opening service and returned to give the announcement on the final day of Synod, Saturday 7 September.
He told the 350 Synod representatives that the decision was “right for me and the diocese”. He was aware that his illness over the last 18 months had put a greater load on the rest of the episcopal team and that he still had a long road to recovery ahead of him.
“The diocese needs to move on,” he said.
Bishop Jim has been battling a rare form of lymphoma since the end of 2017 and recently began some new rounds of chemotherapy.
