Fun in the sun at Summer Adventure Weekend
A great time was had by all who attended the diocese’s Summer Adventure Weekend at Long Bay in mid-January.
Fifty people representing 18 families came from far and wide to enjoy two days of fun in the sun, beach activities, and plenty of time to chill and get to know others.
While there was accommodation to suit everyone from a couple of 2-year-olds to an 89-year-old, around 16 people opted to sleep ‘marae-style’ in one of the large meeting rooms at Vaughan Park.
“We had great-grandparents there with their grandchildren and their grandchildren’s children, so it was truly intergenerational, which was wonderful and exactly what it needed to be,” said Children & Family Ministries Facilitator Jacolize Becker, who organised the camp (her third).
The theme for the weekend was Jesus’ story of building a house on sand or rock. Families were encouraged to think about the foundations they wanted to lay for family life this year. The story was illustrated on the beach with a sandcastle building competition and developed further through family devotions led each evening by Annette Osborne from Scripture Union.
During the day, everyone was free to participate (or not!) in rock-climbing, paddle-boarding, sea-kayaking, abseiling, exploring the rocky shore, or testing their nerves on giant ladders and stacks of crates.
On Sunday, after a cooked breakfast and family time, Bishop Ross led a final eucharist in the outdoor chapel, followed by lunch together. Then it was time to say goodbye to new-found friends and leave for home. Families were given a ‘goodie-bag’, including a Family on Mission journal which supports family connections and discipleship in the home.
“I want to stay here for the rest of my life!” said one 9-year-old boy. His enthusiasm was echoed in other positive comments:
“Thank you for giving my family the opportunity to be part of this awesome weekend.”
“I enjoyed seeing kids and families having so much time together.”
“Well-paced – I loved the activities and time to stop and relax too.”
“I enjoyed making new friends and spending time with others doing activities.”
“The best part for me was time out as a family.”
