New archdeacon appointed
The new archdeacon for ministry units in the mid-North and Far North is The Reverend Jonathan Gale, currently vicar of St Peter’s in Takapuna.
Jonathan will be responsible for the Waimate Archdeaconry, including the Wellsford and Mangawhai Mission Districts, and the ministry units north of there. He will also coordinate the Healthy Church Consultation programme, work previously done by Sarah Moss.
Jonathan has been at St Peter’s since 2014, having previously served as a curate and priest assistant in Devonport and as LSM enabler in South Kaipara and Huapai. Before becoming a priest in 2009, he worked in education and development banking in South Africa, migrating with his family to New Zealand in 1996.
His roles here included working as an investment advisor in the Tertiary Education Commission and an industry manager for Competenz. He has been a member of various education and community advisory boards and was a founding board member of Vanguard Military School, a partnership school in Albany.
Jonathan is a very keen mountain biker and has been described as “theologically conservative, socially liberal and ecclesiastically catholic,” a description he agrees with. He is married to Faith and they have two children and three grandchildren.
