Matariki Liturgies

Matariki Liturgies

Matariki celebrates the Māori new year in Aotearoa New Zealand and became a public holiday in 2022. The exact date for the beginning of Matariki in the Gregorian calendar changes from year to year and varies regionally across New Zealand, but generally falls within June or July within the season of Ordinary Time. Matariki is a time to remember those who have passed, reflect on where we have come from, and look ahead to a new year. It is also a time to consider how we will look after the natural resources around us and give thanks for creation.

These resources have been prepared by the Tikanga Pākehā members of Liturgical Commission for possible use on/around Matariki. A three tikanga resource may be developed in the future.

  • Matariki liturgy I: Memorial of the Departed
  • Matariki liturgy II: Nativity of St. John the Baptist/Midwinter
  • Matariki liturgy III: Thanksgiving for Creation
  • Matariki liturgy IV: From generation to generation/Thanksgiving for Whakapapa
